Best time to visit Ruka
Ruka works in every season, but each month gives you something different. Snow lies for around 200 days a year, the sun rises even in December, and in midsummer it stays up all night for about three weeks.

Ruka lies about 40 km south of the Arctic Circle, in the north-east of Finland. Snow usually covers the ground from the second half of October into May, around 200 days a year in the words of the tourist association, and the ski slopes are open for most of that time. In summer the Oulanka National Park next door takes over, with rivers, bears and long trails. What changes most from month to month is the light, followed by the cold and the crowds.
The table gives a quick overview. Sun times are for Ruka village from the US Naval Observatory. Temperatures are daily means we calculated from Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) data for the Ruka village station, 2016 to 2024; they are rough values from a short series, not official climate figures.

Light in midwinter
Ruka sits just south of the Arctic Circle, so it never has polar night in the strict sense. The tourist association and Metsähallitus, which runs Finland's national parks, both say so: in December there are about three hours of daylight, in November and January about five. On the shortest day, 21 December 2026, the sun rises at 10:43 and sets at 13:20. Civil twilight adds usable light from 08:59 to 15:04, about six hours in total.
For outdoor plans that means doing the long things around midday. A morning start in the dark is normal, and by mid-afternoon the light is gone. The days lengthen fast after New Year. By 1 February the sun is up for six and a half hours, by 1 March for almost ten.

How cold it gets
For January the tourist association gives minus 30 to minus 15 degrees. That range is wider than what the station data show as an average. Our own calculation from FMI data for the Ruka village station shows a January daily mean of about minus 10 degrees between 2016 and 2024, with average lows of about minus 14. Metsähallitus adds that the coldest spells usually come in January and early February, and that the Oulanka river valley can be more than 10 degrees colder than Ruka itself. The lowest reading it reports for Kiutaköngäs in the valley is minus 46 degrees.
In summer the tourist association gives 20 to 25 degrees for July. The FMI data for Ruka village show average July highs of about 20 degrees, so warm days are common but not the rule.
Late winter for snow and skiing
The ski season of 2026/27 runs from 2 October to 2 May. The first weeks depend on snow stored from the previous winter, and Metsähallitus points out that winter itself usually begins in early November, when the daily mean drops below zero for good. Its advice for skiers is clear: the best season runs from early February until the end of April in a good year. Cross-country trails are groomed until late April, depending on snow and ice.
February and March combine deep snow with longer days. They also bring the Finnish school holidays, from 20 February to 14 March 2027 in three waves, when the resort is at its busiest. Late March and April give long, bright days on the slopes, and the tourist association reminds skiers to pack sunglasses.
Husky safaris run from November to April as far as the snow allows. In December a midday tour gets the best of the light.
Aurora season
The Finnish Meteorological Institute names February to March and September to October as the best months for the northern lights, and the hours from 21:00 to 1:00 local time as the best part of the night. It gives no frequency for Kuusamo. What is certain is that the bright nights of summer hide the aurora: from about mid-May to early August the sun never sinks more than six degrees below the horizon in Ruka. Roughly from late August to early April the nights are dark enough. Clouds decide the rest, and the tourist association says plainly that the northern lights cannot be reliably predicted.

Spring thaw and the in-between weeks
Spring usually reaches Kuusamo in the last week of April. In May the snow melts, paths get wet and slushy, and in Oulanka the spring flood peaks around mid-May, when parts of the Karhunkierros trail can be impassable for a while. The tourist association calls mid-May the midseason: skiing and snowshoeing are over, but the summer trails are not ready. Snow on the paths into June is not unusual.
Autumn has a second gap in October and November, when the lakes do not yet carry ice and there is too little snow for winter activities. The slopes are already open by then, running on snow stored from the previous winter.
Midnight sun and summer
Summer begins in the first half of June. From about 11 June to 2 July 2027 the US Naval Observatory has the sun above the horizon all night in Ruka. This is a narrow case: at the solstice the centre of the sun dips roughly 0.4 degrees below the horizon at midnight, and it stays visible only because the atmosphere bends its light upwards. A hill or forest to the north can hide it. The tourist association gives mid-June to the end of the month for the midnight sun.
Mosquitoes usually hatch around the middle to the end of June, followed by black flies and horseflies, though Metsähallitus notes that recent summers have been light on mosquitoes. The main season in Oulanka runs from late June to the end of September. Bear watching from hides runs daily from May to September, and the Kitkajoki rafting season runs from May to October.
Ruska in September
The autumn colours, ruska in Finnish, usually begin around 12 September and last two to three weeks, unless an autumn storm strips the leaves early. The ground vegetation turns first, and the birches follow about a week later. Viewpoints on the fells, such as Ruka, Valtavaara, Pyhävaara and Riisitunturi, and the shores of the Oulankajoki and Kitkajoki rivers are where the tourist association sends visitors. September is also one of the FMI's two best aurora periods, so a clear autumn night can bring colour on the ground and in the sky.

Questions travellers ask
Is there polar night in Ruka?
No. Ruka lies just south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun rises every day. On 21 December it is up from 10:43 to 13:20, with twilight from about 9:00 to 15:00.
Can you see the midnight sun in Ruka?
Yes, from about 11 June to 2 July the sun stays above the horizon at midnight. This only works because the atmosphere bends the light slightly, so hills or forest to the north can hide it.
How cold is Ruka in January?
The tourist association gives minus 30 to minus 15 degrees for January. Weather station data from Ruka village for 2016 to 2024 average about minus 10 degrees over the whole day, and the Oulanka river valley can be more than 10 degrees colder.
When is the best snow for skiing?
Metsähallitus calls late winter the best ski season, from early February to the end of April in a good year. The slopes themselves open on 2 October 2026 on stored snow.
Which months are best for the northern lights?
The Finnish Meteorological Institute names February to March and September to October, with the best hours from 21:00 to 1:00. Clear skies are the condition, and no month brings a guarantee.
