Both plans assume you stay in Ruka village or Ruka Valley, the two halves of the resort linked by the Village-2-Valley gondola. Finavia gives about 30 minutes by road from Kuusamo Airport, and an airport bus meets the scheduled flights; seats must be booked at the latest 24 hours before. Distances below are from the village.

The winter plan is built around early February. By 1 February the sun is up from 09:02 to 15:33, enough for a tour in the morning and another after lunch. In late December the same day shrinks to the hours between 10:43 and 13:20, so in that month keep one daytime tour per day.

Winter day 1, arrival and a first evening out

Take the airport bus to the village and use the afternoon to rent anything missing from your winter kit. From 15 January to 7 February 2027 the slopes are lit for the Polar Night Light Festival, with a torchlight descent on the Kuru slope every Friday at 19:00. Fridays also bring night skiing until 23:00.

For a first evening away from the lights, MyTrail Finland runs a slow snowshoe walk of 2 to 6 km for at most eight people, with pickup in Ruka village or Ruka Valley. If the northern lights show up, the tour may run longer, though the tour page makes no promise that they will.

Winter day 2, reindeer and your own husky sled

Lammintupa Winter Village puts both animals into one 3.5-hour tour. Reindeer pull you for 1.5 km, and then you drive a husky sled yourself for 5 km, one adult steering and one riding, before a snack in a hut. The tour page names Lammintupa Café as the meeting point and lists no transfer, so book a taxi or plan the trip there in advance.

In the evening, Ruka Safaris collects guests in the Ruka area for a three-hour search for the northern lights. You sit in a sledge pulled by a snowmobile and stop at a fire for coffee or tea. The tour page says that with luck you may see the aurora, and guests on cloudy nights did not.

Winter day 3, Oulanka on snowshoes

Juuma, the start of the Pieni Karhunkierros loop, lies about 23 km from the village by road. Ruka Adventures drives you there for a guided snowshoe walk of 2 to 4 km over varied ground, with hot chocolate afterwards. Snowshoes are included but clothing is not. With a full day to spare, MyTrail Finland offers a private 10 km snowshoe trail on the Karhunkierros with a meal by the campfire; it takes six hours with transfers and is not open to children under 12.

Back in Ruka, end the day in a smoke sauna. Salonki Travels runs open sessions of up to ten people at Pyhäpiilo, about 5.6 km from Ruka towards Kuusamo, with a smoke sauna, an ice sauna and a hole in the ice. The tour page warns that map apps do not find the right road, so follow its written directions.

Winter day 4, a snowmobile morning

A morning on a snowmobile fits before an afternoon flight. The scenic safari of Ruka Adventures collects you in Ruka centre and lends an overall, boots and helmet; two people share a machine, and the driver needs a physical licence valid in Finland. The electric snowmobiles of Ruka Guides leave from the SKI-INN building in Ruka Valley and take children from five. The tourist association says the airport bus leaves Ruka Valley two hours before each flight.

Summer day 1, arrival and the midnight sun

The summer plan works best between mid-June and early July. The US Naval Observatory data show the sun above the horizon around the clock in Ruka from 11 June to 2 July 2027, and the nights stay light until early August. For the first evening, Korpi Gravel leads a four-hour gravel ride from the red Tykky Scenic Tower in the village with a break around midnight. A rental bike is included; the minimum age is 16 and the pace suits fit riders.

Summer day 2, the Pieni Karhunkierros

This 12 km loop from the Juuma car park is one of the most popular hikes in Finland, and Metsähallitus rates it as demanding because of its length and climbs. You pass the old mill at Myllykoski after 1.5 km and the 9-metre Jyrävä waterfall after 3.1 km, cross three suspension bridges and climb about 300 steps at Kallioportti. Take your rubbish home, since there are no bins along the way.

In 2026 the Karhunkierros Express bus left Ruka village for Juuma at 10:15 and 14:15 from Monday to Saturday, from June to the end of September, but only when someone had pre-booked. For an easier day, Rukapalvelu drives guests to a wilderness camp by Lake Juuma for a guided canoe trip suited to beginners and families.

Summer day 3, river floating and a bear hide

Spend the morning at Kiveskoski on the Kitkajoki. Rukapalvelu runs two floats of about 15 minutes each in a floating suit, all year, for groups of at least four; you need to be at least 150 cm tall.

In the evening, drive or take a taxi to the car park at Kuntijärventie 127. Bear Kuusamo watches from seven wooden hides with a guide from May to September, and the walk from the car park is 300 to 500 metres. The operator calls a sighting 99 per cent likely and lets you come back for free if no bear appears. It offers no transport to the hides.

Summer day 4, Kiutaköngäs or Riisitunturi

The Oulanka Visitor Centre lies about 32 km from Ruka by road, and a 1 km path leads from there to Kiutaköngäs, where the river runs for 325 metres beside a reddish dolomite cliff. The Karhunkierros Express ends at the visitor centre. Metsähallitus is looking for a new long-term tenant, so check the opening hours before you go.

Riisitunturi National Park is also 30 km from Ruka. MyTrail Finland guides private hikes of 4 to 8 km there in the midnight sun of June and July and again in September and October. Plan this day before an evening flight rather than with an early departure.

Adapting the plans

For an autumn version, come after 12 September, when by local tradition the ruska colours reach Kuusamo, and swap the gravel ride for the Riisitunturi hike. Bear watching continues until the end of September with earlier evening starts. Our page on autumn colours covers the best viewpoints.

In winter, keep the aurora outings spread over the stay rather than on the last night. If you only have three days, drop day 4 and fit the snowmobile into the afternoon of day 3. The page on getting around Ruka lists the buses, taxis and car parks that the plans rely on.

Questions travellers ask

How many days do I need in Ruka?

Four days give you one day with animals, one in Oulanka National Park and one on a snowmobile or bike, with evenings left for the aurora in winter or a bear hide in summer. Two or three extra days let you ski or walk without a guide.

Can I walk the Pieni Karhunkierros in winter?

Usually yes. Metsähallitus says the 12 km loop normally stays open all winter because snowshoers keep the path trodden, but the wooden stairs get slippery and it recommends ice grips for your shoes.

Do I need a car for these plans?

Not for most of the winter plan, since many tours collect guests in Ruka. The bear hides and the Kujala reindeer farm have no transfer, and the Lammintupa tours list only a meeting point, so plan a taxi there. Taxis in Ruka-Kuusamo run around the clock.

How do I get to Juuma without a car in summer?

In 2026 the Karhunkierros Express ran from Ruka village to Juuma and on to the Oulanka Visitor Centre from June to September, Monday to Saturday, and only with a pre-booking. A shared taxi to the trail starts is the other option; the 2027 timetable was not yet published in October 2026.

When should I plan a summer trip?

The sun stays up from 11 June to 2 July 2027, and bear watching runs from May to September. Mosquitoes usually hatch around mid to late June, and the autumn colours start around 12 September.
