Getting around Ruka

Inside Ruka village you walk, and a gondola links it with Ruka Valley. For Kuusamo, the national parks and the trailheads you rely on seasonal buses, taxis, a hire car or the transfers that come with many tours.

Ruka is compact. The tourist association points out that guests who stay in Ruka village do not need a car, because the services are within walking distance. The pedestrian village sits at the foot of the slopes, with the Kumpare shopping centre and the Ruka Info tourist office in its centre. Distances only start to matter once you leave the fell: Kuusamo centre is about 25 km away by road, and the trailheads around Oulanka National Park lie roughly 20 to 50 km out.

Gondola and SkiBus around the fell

The Village-2-Valley gondola connects Ruka village with Ruka Valley on the east side of the fell. It is a scenic lift, but the tourist association also describes it as a public transport link between the two. In the 2026/27 season it runs from 9:30 to 23:00, so it still works after dinner when the slopes have closed.

The SkiBus covers the rest of the ski area. Line 1 runs between Ruka village and Ruka Valley around the resort, and line 2 between Ruka village and Rukan Salonki. In the 2025/26 season both ran from 7 November to 1 May and were free in the ski resort area for anyone with a valid ski pass. The dates and timetable for 2026/27 had not been published by mid-October, so check them at Ruka Info or on the tourist association's bus page after you arrive.

Between Ruka and Kuusamo

The road from Ruka village to Kuusamo centre is about 25 km long and takes roughly half an hour by car. Here the tourist association's own pages disagree. Its arrival page says the only way between Ruka and Kuusamo is by taxi, while its bus page lists regular buses between Ruka village and Kuusamo centre, and its car rental page says public transport runs smoothly between the two. The bus page is the more detailed one. In winter the connection is SkiBus line 3, which in the 2025/26 season ran from 1 December to 1 May. Look up the current timetable before you plan a day around it, and keep a taxi as the fallback for late evenings.

The airport bus also stops at the Spa Hotel Kuusamon Tropiikki on its way between the airport, Ruka village and Ruka Valley. It runs for scheduled flights and has to be booked; the details are on our page about getting to Ruka.

Taxis and Uber

Taxis serve Ruka and Kuusamo 24 hours a day. The tourist association names Ruka Taxi Service, Ruka Taxi Station and the Otaxi taxi centre for Kuusamo and Ruka, and all taxis accept card payment. Taxis to and from the airport need to be booked in advance. Uber is present too, but with only a few cars, so do not count on getting one at short notice.

In summer there is a second way to the trailheads: a shared taxi, kimppataksi in Finnish, takes hikers to the starting points of the Karhunkierros trail at Juuma, Kiutaköngäs and Hautajärvi.

Summer buses to Oulanka

From June to September seasonal buses run into the national park area. In 2026 the tourist association listed three lines:

  • Karhunkierros Express from Ruka village via Juuma and Basecamp Oulanka to the Oulanka Visitor Centre, 1 June to 30 September, Monday to Saturday, leaving Ruka village at 10:15 and 14:15, only when seats are pre-booked
  • Ruka Valley to Ruka village, Käylä and Hautajärvi, daily from 1 June to 30 September
  • Kuusamo Airport to Ruka and Salla, 25 May to 30 September

The 2027 timetables were not yet published in October 2026. The routes matter for hikers: Hautajärvi is the northern start of the Karhunkierros, and Juuma lies close to the start of the shorter Pieni Karhunkierros loop. Our page on the Karhunkierros trail explains the stages.

Hire cars, car sharing and parking

A car gives you the most freedom for the national parks. By road, Juuma is about 23 km from Ruka village, the Oulanka Visitor Centre about 32 km and Hautajärvi about 46 km. Metsähallitus gives 30 km from Ruka to Oulanka National Park, and the tourist association 30 km to Riisitunturi and 100 km to Hossa.

Hire cars are limited at the airport, so reserve one together with your flight. In Ruka itself a car sharing pilot with the town of Kuusamo places a shared car called Maisa in the heated Ruka parking garage, booked through the Omago app. For parking, Ruka has a semi-heated garage, free parking areas at the foot of the slopes and an underground car park for 320 cars in the pedestrian village. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 31 March when conditions call for them.

On foot, on skis and by snowmobile

In winter, keep to the right kind of trail. Walking on cross-country ski trails is forbidden except on signposted stretches, and sledging is not allowed on nature trails. The Vuosseli trail is the exception built for everyone: it is groomed and open to skiers, fatbikers and walkers alike.

The region also has 400 km of marked snowmobile routes that are free to use, plus about 100 km of routes kept by the safari companies. If you have never driven a snowmobile, the tourist association advises a guided safari rather than renting one on your own. On the safari below two people share a machine, and drivers need a physical driving licence valid in Finland.

Letting the tours drive

Many winter activities, from reindeer visits to husky rides and snowmobile safaris, include transfers from Ruka village or Ruka Valley. The tourist association advises checking your booking details, because not every tour does: some start at the operator's own base. Day trips go further. The Ranua Wildlife Park trip, for example, collects you from your accommodation in Ruka or Kuusamo and includes entry to the park.

For winter trips into the national parks, the snowshoe tour to Juuma in Oulanka and the evening ski tour in Riisitunturi both start with a pickup in Ruka. More ideas are on our page on day trips from Ruka.
