Most of the husky tours you can book for Ruka start at Lammintupa Winter Village, whose Safari House stands at Lammintuvantie 9 in Rukatunturi. Every dedicated husky safari in the comparison below comes from there. The second operator, Rukapalvelu, builds husky and reindeer sleigh rides into longer winter days at a wilderness camp or an activity park, and drives guests out from its Safarihouse in Ruka village and from the Kuusamon Tropiikki spa hotel.

The Ruka-Kuusamo Tourist Association lists husky safaris from November to April, as far as the snow allows, and advises booking early. The Rukapalvelu activity park runs only from January.

You steer the sled yourself

There is no husky tour near Ruka sold as a pure passenger ride. On each Lammintupa safari a sled carries two people. One adult stands on the runners and drives, the other sits in the basket, and you can change over during the trip. The tour pages ask for good physical condition and say the safaris are not suitable during pregnancy. The Rukapalvelu combination days do not say who holds the brake, so they are no safe choice for anyone who wants to sit back the whole way.

The tourist association describes the same arrangement: on a dog sled ride you can try steering the dogs yourself, and children travel in the sleigh. For a passenger trip without any steering, look at a reindeer sleigh ride instead. At the Kujala farm in Kuusamo you sit in the sleigh while reindeer pull it for 1.5 km.

How much of the tour is on the sled

The 5 km safari is the shortest self-drive option, and its length is the point guests raise most often. The figures on the tour page explain it. The tour is sold as 1.5 hours, yet the ride takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the weather. That is roughly a third of the booked time. The rest is spent at the start, over homemade buns in a hut and with sausages grilled at the fire. Guests have written that the ride felt short next to the 1.5 hours on the booking and that the price seemed high for it. One also found that a slow sled ahead kept braking.

Seen that way, the 5 km tour suits a first try with the dogs, a family with little time, or a day that already has other plans. If driving is the point for you, the 10 km ride doubles the distance and adds half an hour to the total of 2 hours. Its tour page gives 30 to 45 minutes of riding in one place and about an hour in another, followed by buns, coffee or tea and sausages by the fire. A guest on that tour wished for more time to pet the dogs.

The 5 km safari with soup lunch keeps the short ride of about 30 minutes and replaces the hut snack with homemade soup, bread and hot drinks. Groups are capped at 12, and drivers must be at least 15 years old. A guest put the distance simply: 5 km go by very quickly.

The morning 10 km safari with breakfast also takes at most 12 people and serves hot drinks with a sandwich or a savoury pie. It is not open to children under 3. Its page has the same mismatch as the other 10 km tour, with 45 minutes to an hour in the text and 30 to 45 minutes in the list of inclusions.

Huskies and reindeer on one day

Lammintupa pairs both animals in a 3.5-hour tour that starts at its café. You first ride 1.5 km behind reindeer, then drive a husky sled for 5 km under the same rule as the other safaris, one adult steering and one riding. A snack in a hut follows. One guest found the whole programme took about 3 hours.

The Rukapalvelu winter adventure park is the choice for a mixed group. Out of 3.5 hours, about 2.5 hours are spent in the park; transfers take up the rest. You choose freely between husky and reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiles, mini snowmobiles for children and tubing. Winter clothing, grilled sausages and a soup lunch are included. The park is not suitable for people with limited mobility or heart problems.

The same company runs a wilderness camp day with a sleigh pulled by huskies or reindeer. The title promises both, the description says one or the other. A snowmobile ride, sledding and snow sculptures fill the rest of the 3.5 hours, and a thermal suit, wool socks, boots and gloves are lent. The tour needs at least 10 participants; if that number is not reached by 16:00 the day before, it is cancelled and fully refunded.

Light, cold and clothing

Ruka lies just south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun rises every day of the year. On 21 December it is up from 10:43 to 13:20, after twilight from 08:59. By 1 February daylight lasts from 09:02 to 15:33, and by 1 March from 07:18 to 17:15. A midday tour in December gets the brightest part of a short day, while from February the afternoon works as well.

The coldest spells usually come in January and early February, according to Metsähallitus, which runs the national parks. Weather station data from Ruka village for 2016 to 2024 give an average January low of roughly minus 14 degrees. The Lammintupa safaris do not lend overalls; their pages ask you to bring warm clothing, and the passenger sits still for the whole ride. One guest on the 10 km trail found the blankets in the sled a bit thin. Winter overalls can be rented in Ruka, and the tourist association notes that many people find mittens warmer than gloves. Our page on what to wear in Ruka lists the layers.

Fitting a husky ride into your stay

The short safaris leave room for something else the same day. An afternoon ride pairs well with a northern lights evening, though no tour can promise the sky. The tour pages give no transfer for the Lammintupa safaris, only the meeting point, so plan how you reach the Safari House and arrive 15 minutes before the start, as the 10 km tour asks. In winter a 6 km snowshoe and fatbike trail also leads to Lammintupa, and the tourist association rates it as suitable for the whole family.

Keep the combination days for a day without other plans. They take 3.5 hours, and the Rukapalvelu days include transfers and a soup lunch, so in December they cover most of the daylight.

Questions travellers ask

Can I just sit in the sled while a guide drives?

Not on the husky tours listed here. On the Lammintupa safaris one adult drives and the other rides, and you can change places. If no one in your group wants to steer, a reindeer sleigh ride is the passenger option.

How long am I actually on the sled?

About 20 to 30 minutes on the 5 km safari and roughly 30 minutes to an hour on the 10 km ride, depending on the weather. The rest of the booked time covers the start, the snack in a hut and the campfire.

Can children come along?

The tourist association says children travel in the sleigh on a husky safari. The morning safari does not take children under 3, and on the tour with soup lunch drivers must be at least 15, so check the age column for each tour.

Do I need my own winter clothes?

For the Lammintupa safaris, yes: the tour pages ask you to bring warm clothing. The Rukapalvelu combination days lend winter clothing, and overalls can also be rented in Ruka.

When does the husky season start?

The tourist association gives November to April, depending on snow. The winter adventure park with husky and reindeer rides opens in January.
