Northern lights in Ruka

Ruka lies just south of the Arctic Circle, and from about late August to early April its evenings are dark enough for the aurora. Seeing it on a given night depends on a clear sky, which no tour can arrange.

Ruka sits at about 66.17 degrees north, roughly 40 km south of the Arctic Circle. The sun rises here every day of the year, even on 21 December, but the winter afternoons end early. On the shortest day civil twilight is over at 15:04, and the sky is dark long before the usual aurora hours.

How often the lights appear above Ruka is a question without an official answer. The Finnish Meteorological Institute, FMI, explains that the aurora depends on the latitude of the observer and becomes rarer to the south. It counts every second night as an auroral night in Sodankylä, further north in Lapland, but gives no figure for Kuusamo. The Ruka-Kuusamo Tourist Association says plainly that the northern lights cannot be reliably predicted.

When the sky is dark enough

From about mid-May to early August the nights in Ruka never get properly dark, and the aurora is invisible against the light sky. After that the dark returns quickly. Roughly from late August until early April there is enough darkness in the evening; by 1 April civil twilight lasts until 20:53, and the window closes soon after.

FMI names February to March and September to October as the best months, and late winter and early autumn as the statistically most favourable times. Within a night it recommends the hours around midnight, about 21:00 to 01:00 local time. Autumn has a second attraction here: on still evenings the lights can be reflected in the lakes and ponds of Kuusamo, which the tourist association describes for the autumn months.

Clouds and forecasts

The tourist association calls a clear sky or minimal cloud cover the precondition for seeing the aurora. Dense cloud hides it completely, however active it is. FMI publishes an aurora forecast based on magnetometer readings, and when the upper threshold is exceeded it considers a sighting very likely. Read that together with the ordinary weather forecast: a strong reading under full cloud is no use.

Guests on the tours have met exactly this problem. On the sledge tour, two December 2025 reviews mention no aurora because of cloud, and on the snowshoe search one guest only saw the lights on a camera screen.

Places to look near Ruka

You do not need a tour to look. The tourist association names Juhannuskallio, which you can reach by car, and the area around Valtavaara and Konttainen as good spots near Ruka. It also points to Riisitunturi in Posio, about 30 km from Ruka, where an open wilderness hut stands on the top of the fell. Move away from street lights and give your eyes time to adjust.

Some practical limits apply. There is no fireplace at the Konttainen viewing spot, so a hot drink has to come in a flask. Walking on the groomed ski trails is not allowed, except where signs say so.

Sitting in a sledge

The evening tour by Ruka Safaris is the most relaxed format. You sit in a sledge pulled by a snowmobile, ride out from the Ruka area to a fire, and have a snack with coffee or tea. Gear is included, though the tour page does not list what, and so is the pickup from the Ruka area. The page calls it suitable for families. The tour needs at least four guests; if they are missing at 15:00 the day before, it is cancelled with a full refund.

On snowshoes

Ruka Safaris also runs a three-hour search on snowshoes. The walk is given as 2 to 5 km, it starts at 11 years and needs at least four participants. You can book a pickup or come to the Ruka Safaris Safarihouse at Onkerniementie 12 ten minutes before the start. A hot drink by the fire is mentioned in the description. One guest in January 2026 walked only about a kilometre and called it a small event, and another in December 2024 found too little snow, so expect a gentle outing.

MyTrail Finland keeps its night walk smaller, with at most eight people and at least two. The 2.5-hour tour covers 2 to 6 km at a slow pace from the Saarua car park in Ruka Valley, with pickup at the Kumpare centre in Ruka village or in Ruka Valley. Outdoor clothing, boots and warm drinks are included, and the page notes the tour may run longer when the aurora is out.

The ski resort's own guides offer an evening snowshoe walk from the Ruka Valley activity centre after the slopes close. It takes children from 5 years, lends a winter overall, boots, wool socks and gloves, and ends with a snack by the fire.

A free second night

One tour in the comparison offers a rule for an empty sky. If the northern lights do not appear on your night, you can rebook the next available tour for free; there is no refund. It runs from September to March with hotel pickup in the Ruka area, in private or small groups of up to eight, with photo coaching for cameras and sausages by a campfire. The tour page gives two different durations, so check the length when you book, and remember that the free rebooking only helps if you still have a night left.

By electric snowmobile

For guests from 12 years, Ruka Guides drives out after dark on electric snowmobiles, two to a machine, with coffee or tea and a pastry. A sighting is not promised. The resort's terms require drivers to be 18 with a licence accepted in Finland, and the excess is 1,200 euros per snowmobile; our page on snowmobile tours from Ruka explains the rules.

Staying warm while you wait

Aurora watching means standing or sitting still in the cold. The MyTrail and Ruka Guides walks lend outdoor clothing; on the Ruka Safaris tours you bring your own warm layers. Many people find mittens warmer than gloves, and hand and foot warmers are sold in Ruka. Our page on what to wear in Ruka lists the layers.
