Snowmobile tours in Ruka

On every snowmobile safari near Ruka two people share a machine and at least one of them drives. That makes the driving licence and the accident excess the first things to check, before the route or the length.

The snowmobile safaris in the comparison come from three companies. Ruka Adventures collects guests in Ruka centre. Lammintupa Winter Village, better known for its husky safaris, starts from its Safari House. Ruka Guides, the activity arm of the ski resort, uses electric snowmobiles and meets guests at its activity centre in the SKI-INN Ruka Valley building on the slope side. If you stay in Ruka village or Ruka West, the gondola ride across to the Valley is free for this tour.

The region has plenty of room to drive. The tourist association counts 400 km of marked snowmobile routes that are free to use, plus 100 km of routes kept by the safari companies themselves.

Licence, age and the excess

Every safari in the comparison is self-drive, with two people on one machine. The rules for the driver are strict and similar across the operators.

  • You need a driving licence valid in Finland. Ruka Adventures asks for the physical card, and the Ruka Guides page tells you to bring it.
  • Drivers must be at least 18 on the Lammintupa safaris and under the Ruka Ski Resort terms.
  • You need at least as many drivers as passengers on the Lammintupa safaris, so a group of three adults with one licence holder does not work.
  • If you crash, you carry an excess. Ruka Adventures and Lammintupa give 1,000 euros per snowmobile. The terms of Rukakeskus, which runs the ski resort and Ruka Guides, set 1,200 euros per driver, per snowmobile, per incident.

Check before the trip what your travel insurance says about it.

The scenic safari from Ruka centre

Ruka Adventures runs a 2.5-hour safari with a transfer from Ruka centre. Two people share a snowmobile, and the break brings a warm drink and a bun. The company lends a thermal overall, boots, a helmet, mittens and woollen socks, so you need little of your own beyond a warm base layer. The page describes the tour as good for families and beginners.

One guest in March 2026 noted that the safari essentially follows the official snowmobile route and that rental snowmobiles are easy to find in Ruka. That is a fair point for experienced drivers. For a first time on a snowmobile, the tourist association advises a guided safari rather than renting on your own.

Short and long safaris from Lammintupa

The two-hour safari from the Lammintupa Safari House is sold as 2.5 hours in total, with about 1.5 hours on the snowmobile. Sausages are grilled by a fire, with homemade sweet pastry, campfire coffee, tea, hot juice or hot chocolate. Overalls, boots, balaclavas and helmets are lent. The page sets a minimum group size and cancels the tour if it is not reached by 16:00 on the day before. Children under 4 and anyone under 140 cm cannot join, and the tour is not advised for people with back problems.

The pace follows the slowest driver. A guest in December 2025 felt the group moved so slowly that it was like going for a walk. If speed matters to you, the four-hour safari gives you about three hours of driving with a change of driver halfway, under the same rules on height and licences.

A third Lammintupa option combines a snowmobile safari with ice karting over three hours. Here the minimum height is 150 cm, and drivers again need to be 18 with a Finnish-valid licence.

Electric snowmobiles from Ruka Valley

Ruka Guides runs its tours on electric snowmobiles, two people to a machine. The daytime tour lasts about two to 2.5 hours and ends with coffee or tea and a sweet pastry. It accepts children from 5 years, the lowest age in the comparison, and lends a winter overall, wool socks, boots, gloves and a helmet. The excess is 1,200 euros per snowmobile.

The evening version heads out after dark with the northern lights in mind, though the tour page promises no sighting. It is for guests from 12 years. The page itself does not mention the licence, but the resort's own terms require drivers to be 18 and to hold a licence accepted in Finland, so plan for that. Our page on the northern lights in Ruka covers the season and the evening tours that do not need a driver.

Ice karting at Lammintupa

The ice karting race takes place on an icy track of about 500 metres, with a qualifying round and a final for groups of 4 to 16. The booked hour includes roughly 15 to 20 minutes of driving. If the weather does not allow the race, you get a full refund; if you arrive more than 15 minutes late, your place is not guaranteed. The minimum height is 150 cm.

The reviews are mixed. A guest in February 2026 reported a kart changed five times because of faults and no refund, and another in March 2026 had a kart break down in the second round. A December 2025 guest found the hour too long for the driving time and missed a warm-up lap. Keep this one as an add-on rather than the main event of a day.

Riding without a licence

Without a licence holder in your group, the snowmobile safaris above are closed to you. The option is to sit in a sledge pulled by a guide's snowmobile. Ruka Safaris runs such a tour in the evening, with a stop at a fire for coffee, tea and a snack, and pickup from the Ruka area. It is listed with the aurora tours.

Cold and light on the trail

The driver takes the wind, and the passenger sits still behind. Weather station data from Ruka village for 2016 to 2024 give an average January low of roughly minus 14 degrees, and Metsähallitus warns that the Oulanka river valley can be more than 10 degrees colder than the Ruka-Kuusamo area. The lent overalls go over your own clothes, so keep a wool or fleece layer underneath and bring a hat that fits under the helmet. Our page on what to wear in Ruka lists the rest.

In December the daytime safaris use most of the light. On 21 December the sun is up in Ruka only from 10:43 to 13:20. By 1 March it rises at 07:18 and sets at 17:15, and an early afternoon safari ends in daylight.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need a driving licence to drive a snowmobile?

Yes. Every safari listed here asks drivers for a driving licence valid in Finland, and most set the minimum age for drivers at 18. Bring the physical card, as the Ruka Adventures page asks for.

What happens if I damage the snowmobile?

You pay an excess. Ruka Adventures and Lammintupa name 1,000 euros per snowmobile, and the Ruka Ski Resort terms set 1,200 euros per driver, per snowmobile, per incident.

Can I ride along without driving?

Yes, as the passenger behind a driver on a shared snowmobile. For a ride without anyone in your group driving, the evening sledge tour pulled by a guide's snowmobile is the alternative.

Can children join a snowmobile safari?

As passengers, depending on the tour. The two-hour Lammintupa safari takes children from 4 years and 140 cm, the electric tour from Ruka Valley from 5 years and its evening version from 12.

Should I rent a snowmobile instead?

The tourist association advises first-timers to choose a guided safari over renting independently. Renting makes more sense once you know the machine and the marked routes.
